Let's Talk About our draft Coastal Hazards and Resilience Strategy

Waitaki's coastline is changing. Erosion, flooding, and rising sea levels are already affecting the places we live, work, and gather along around 70km of our district's coast.

In 2024, we carried out a technical assessment of coastal hazards across the district. This assessment identified 12 high risk sites spanning our district’s coastline, along with potential management options for each of these sites.

We used this assessment to develop a draft Coastal Hazards and Resilience Strategy 2026-2076. The strategy sets the direction and will guide how we plan and respond to coastal hazards now and into the future. It doesn't commit Council to specific spending, projects, or timelines. Detailed action plans for the high-risk sites will follow later once the Strategy has been adopted, and you'll have more chances to have your say on those.

We want your feedback on the draft strategy before we finalise it. Your answers will help us understand what matters most to you and whether you would like to be involved as we progress the action plans.
